Current VAT rates in all 27 EU countries — and how to get them as JSON

Short answer: the European Commission publishes the VAT rates that Member States report to it in the Taxes in Europe Database (TEDB). TEDB has a free anonymous web service, so you can fetch the standard and reduced rates of any Member State for any date as data instead of copying a table. The Clearsource EU VAT rates actor on Apify turns that response into JSON, one record per country, with source and retrieval time on each. Rates change; we do not print a rates table here because it would go stale. Information only, not tax advice.

Where the official rates are

TEDB is run by the Commission (DG TAXUD): ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/tedb. The data is supplied by the Member States, and TEDB may lag behind changes in national law. The Commission's legal notice licenses its content under CC BY 4.0 and implements Decision 2011/833/EU (legal notice, opened 2026-10-10). A TEDB-specific disclaimer page could not be retrieved by us; that point is open.

Steps to get the rates as JSON

  1. Open EU VAT rates on the Apify Store.
  2. Enter the countries (ISO codes, for example RO, DE, FR; leave empty for all 27) and optionally situationOn, a date. The default is today (UTC).
  3. Run it, or call it from your code. Use outputMode: "detailed" for every rate rule with its category, CN codes and the Member State's comment.
{ "countries": ["RO", "DE", "FR"] }
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/clearsource~eu-vat-rates/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=$APIFY_TOKEN" \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"countries":["RO","DE","FR"]}'

What a record looks like

Romania, summary mode, from the TEDB response we recorded on 2026-10-10 (situation date 2026-10-10; fields shortened, provenance abbreviated). It is an example of the format, not a rates reference: check the current TEDB entry and national law.

For Germany, the same recorded TEDB response contains this general standard-rate result (raw TEDB XML, one element): <memberState>DE</memberState><type>STANDARD</type><rate><type>DEFAULT</type><value>19.0</value></rate><situationOn>2026-07-01+02:00</situationOn>. Note that situationOn is the date from which that rule applies as TEDB reports it, not the query date.

Good to know

  • Greece is EL in TEDB; the actor accepts GR and also gives country_iso3166: "GR".
  • Some countries have more than one standard result (for example regional or import rules); they appear in other_standard_rates with TEDB's comment.
  • Filters by CN code (up to 100) are matched by TEDB; read cn_codes and comment before relying on a rate. To find a CN code see how to find the CN code of a product.
  • The actor never computes VAT amounts or decides whether an exemption applies.

Price (Apify README of 2026-10-10): $0.002 per country in summary mode, $0.0002 per rate record in detailed mode, plus Apify's start event (by default $0.00005 per run). Dry runs, invalid input and TEDB errors are not charged.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard VAT rate in country X today?

Run the actor for that country, or open TEDB directly, and read the result with its date. Do not rely on a copied table; Member States change rates and TEDB shows the situation per date.

Are the rates in TEDB legally binding?

No claim is made. They are rates as reported by Member States; verify against national law before charging VAT. For Romanian e-invoicing context see the e-Factura registry guide; to check a Romanian supplier's VAT registration see the CUI VAT check guide.

Can I get past dates?

Yes, with situationOn or a date range in detailed mode (2000-01-01 onwards in the actor's input rules). How far back TEDB itself holds data is not documented (unverified).

Is this an official Commission service?

No. It uses the Commission's public TEDB web service but is not affiliated with or endorsed by the European Commission.
